Potsdam, NY

We are a student group from SUNY Potsdam who have chosen to evaluate the variables involved in ongoing wind energy debates.  In order to put this wide range of information into perspective, we have chosen to use the St. Lawrence Wind Farm, specifically within the Cape Vincent area, as an analytic model for wind energy as a whole.  Wind energy is produced through the use of wind turbines, which are often assembled in groups. These assemblies are referred to as wind farms.  Not only is the St. Lawrence Wind Farm a debate that is local to the North Country, it also provides substantial evidence of the conflicting opinions and information that are common to debates concerning wind energy development.

We believe that there currently is a need for a comprehensive resource that evaluates the topics of concern within the wind energy debate. Our goal is to provide the public with a comprehensive resource that outlines information gathered from reputable organizations and agencies, in a way that is accessible, informative, and concise. The summaries that we provide for these articles will allow a broad audience to understand the reports, and to come to their own conclusions. Our blog summarizes the information regarding impacts on bat and avian species, property values, health, overall energy output and legal regulationsThe information and viewpoints provided within our blog do not reflect the opinions or views of us as a group, but are presented to you in the most objective way possible.

Qualifications and Experience

Our group consists of three SUNY Potsdam students who are finishing their Bachelor degrees in Environmental Studies.  The three of us are familiar with a variety of research projects and have completed many throughout the course of our studies.  Mark Connelly has taken the responsibility of researching the total energy output of the St. Lawrence Wind Farm.  He has successfully completed press releases in the past, and was responsible for the press release that promoted this blog.  Megan O’Keefe researched a variety of topics for our publication, including the permits required before development, the impacts on property values, as well as the possible health effects wind farms can have on humans.  Megan’s past experience in collaborating, producing, and presenting research projects provides her with an apt understanding of objective research.  In order to analyze the impacts on bat and avian species, Kevin Ohol II researched a variety of scientific articles concerning mortality rates across a variety of species, and the methods that can be enacted to reduce these rates.  Kevin’s experience with computers and a variety of web service provides the group with the capabilities of producing an easy to navigate blog.
